Zebulon — Carolina Mudcats outfielder Cameron Maybin was dubbed Southern League hitter of the week for the week of June 2-8.
One of the league’s top prospects, Maybin’s numbers have shot through the roof in the month of June. Maybin, 21, led the league during the week with a 1.000 slugging percentage that fell on seven extra-base hits with three home runs. On Monday, June 2, at Montgomery, Maybin started the streak with three hits comprised of a triple and a two-run homer. He continued the saga Friday against Jacksonville, sending another one over the wall, and on Saturday Maybin had his input in the four-run sixth inning, batting out a two-run double in the 7-5 Carolina victory.The Asheville native furthered his hitting streak to nine games and RBI streak to eight games, Sunday, with a first inning homer that brought the series with the Suns to a close in a 3-1 Mudcat win.In his first seven games of June, Maybin averaged .448 at-bat, with five home runs and 11 RBIs. This came just after averaging .244 with seven homers in the first two months of the season.In 25 attempts, Maybin tallied six runs on 10 hits, including two doubles, two triples and three homers, which accumulated nine RBIs and a batting average of .400 from the plate.
